HARMAN STATEMENT ON SOUTH BAY FLOODING

Washington, D.C. – In response to severe flooding in the South Bay, Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-Venice) today issued the following statement.

“I am deeply concerned about the how the flooding is affecting San Pedro residents. First responders have done an excellent job of ensuring everyone’s safety and I applaud how the community has rallied together to brave the storm. But we must also take steps to prevent recurring floods.

I understand that the city government is evaluating preventive measures for improved drainage and storm water management. I will watch this review with great interest to see if there is any opportunity to secure federal assistance for strengthening San Pedro’s flood defenses.

The storm has had an impact elsewhere in the 36th District, including Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, where piers were closed due to high waves. I spoke with Redondo Beach officials today about the situation there, as well. I urge people who live in low-lying beach areas to be vigilant as rain is expected through the end of the week.”
