HOUSE BUDGET CONFERENCE REPORT PASSES WITH A VETERANS AFFAIRS DISCRETIONARY SPENDING INCREASE OF NEARLY $1 BILLION

Washington, D.C. — Tonight, the House of Representatives passed H. Con. Res. 95, The Concurrent Resolution on the Budget for Fiscal Year 2006, which included an increase in discretionary spending of nearly $1 billion to fund veterans programs.

Washington, DC – Today, House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Steve Buyer (R-Indiana) and Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Larry Craig (R-Idaho) hosted a joint hearing to receive the testimony of veterans’ service organizations.  Testimony was provided by the Fleet Reserve Association, Air Force Sergeants Association, The Retired Enlisted Association, and Gold Star Wives.

Washington, DC – Today, Subcommittee Chairman Jeff Miller (R-FL-01) held a hearing to receive testimony on the Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration (NCA).  The purpose of the hearing was to examine the policy and operational issues facing NCA, including short- and long-term goals with respect to new cemetery construction, and what efforts NCA is taking to address the 928 restoration and repair projects identified in 2002 by the Logistics Management Institute.  The Subcommittee also took testimony on the State Cemetery Grants Program.

Washington, DC – Today, Subcommittee Chairman John Boozman held a hearing to receive testimony from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  The purpose of the hearing was to examine the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program since the VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Task Force Report.  The Subcommittee also explored ways to achieve closer integration between the Department’s VR&E program and the Department of Labor’s Veterans Employment and Training Service.

Washington, D.C. - As part of its annual budget review, the House Committee on Veteran’s Affairs has recommended withholding $311 million for the HealtheVet healthcare processing system from the Department of Veterans Affairs proposed 2006 budget.  The funds are being withheld until questions about potentially serious interoperability problems between it and the legacy VistA system are resolved.

Washington, DC – Today, House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Steve Buyer (R-Indiana) and Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Larry Craig (R-Idaho) hosted a joint hearing to receive the testimony of veterans service organizations.  Providing testimony were the Military Officers Association of America, the National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs, AMVETS, the American Ex-Prisoners of War, and Vietnam Veterans of America provided testimony on the budget Congress is now considering, as well as other issues of importance to America’s veterans.
