WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that he has secured $100,000 in federal funding for My Brother’s Keeper of Genesee County. This funding was secured in H.R. 4899, the Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2010, which passed the House today 308 to 114. This bill has already passed the Senate and now goes to the President to be signed into law.
“My Brother’s Keeper provides critical services to people transitioning out of prison. They provide ex-offenders with transitional housing and counseling to help them get on the right track, helping to reduce incidences of post release crime and improving public safety. This program seeks to stop the cycle of crime and violence in our communities and I am proud to have secured this funding,” said Congressman Kildee.
For the past two years, Congressman Kildee has been fighting to get federal funding for this important program. Because of Congressman Kildee’s diligence, My Brother’s Keeper is one of only nine projects to receive funding in the Supplemental Appropriations Act.
My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) provides a program of emergency and transitional housing coupled with their “Life Steps” program for persons transitioning out of prison into mainstream society. This program will provide homeless and near-homeless, as well as transitioning prisoners with housing (as needed), advocacy, job and life skills under the guidance of a case worker.
