Grants will help an estimated 2,044 workers transition to new employment
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced that the Mid-Michigan region will receive $4,496,800 in National Emergency Grants (NEGs). An estimated 2,044 workers will benefit from worker training to help transition to new employment. Funding was made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which Congressman Kildee strongly supported. The Congressman also has been working directly with the Department of Labor (DOL) to ensure that local communities benefit from this funding.
“Our manufacturing communities have been hit hard by the current economic downturn, causing too many hardworking Americans to lose their jobs through no fault of their own. These workers need our support to help them transition to new employment as we continue working to revitalize our economy,” said Congressman Kildee. “These grants will be extremely helpful for our working families who are struggling under this difficult economic climate and I am proud to have helped bring this assistance to our communities.”
This is the second National Emergency Grant that Mid-Michigan has received. In September, Congressman Kildee announced that Mid-Michigan would receive a $4,496,800 grant with the possibility of a second installment. Since then, the Congressman has worked with DOL to ensure the region received this second payment, bringing the total to nearly $9 million.
Funding is being awarded to the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth. A key focus of the grants will be targeting workers dislocated from the automotive and other related industries for training to transition them to growing areas of the regional economies, including health care, solar manufacturing; and management, scientific and technical consulting services.
Counties that will benefit from this funding are Bay, Clinton, Eaton, Genesee (including the city of Flint), Huron, Ingham, Lapeer, Midland, Saginaw, Sanilac, Shiawassee and Tuscola counties.
