Kildee Helps Keep Historic Bay City Post Office Open for Business

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After learning that the U.S. Postal Service was considering selling and moving the historic Bay City post office building, Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) wrote to Postmaster General John E. Potter on behalf of Bay City and its residents, urging him to reconsider. Today, Congressman Kildee announced that he has received word back from the Postmaster that the USPS now has no current plans to move or sell the building.

“The residents of Bay City are proud of their city’s rich history and have worked tirelessly to preserve their landmarks and historic buildings, including the Post Office.  When residents learned that the downtown post office may move, after nearly 120 years at its current location and nearly 80 years in its current building, they came together to voice their opposition,” said Congressman Kildee.  “I am proud to have been a part of this successful effort and to have delivered Bay City’s message of opposition to the Postmaster General.  It is my hope that the historic Bay City post office building will remain open for business for generations to come.”

Bay City Mayor Charles M. Brunner said: “This is fantastic news. The post office is such an anchor for downtown Bay City, and it would have been very devastating for the area if it had moved out.”
