Huntington Park, CA, Nov 13 -

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) welcomes more than 600 people to the Home Rescue Fair at Huntington Park High School organized by the Alliance for Stabilizing our Communities led by the Montebello Housing Development Corporation.

The event was organized to provide struggling homeowners with the tools and resources to make informed decisions about their futures.  Industry experts were on hand at the fair, including bank representatives, HUD-approved housing counselors and attorneys, to offer advice to the homeowners, many of whom are at risk of foreclosure.

During her remarks, the congresswoman highlighted the steps taken by Congress to address the housing crisis.  She discussed the benefits of the National Foreclosure Mitigation Program, which is funded by Congress to provide foreclosure intervention counseling through nonprofit housing counseling organizations.  The congresswoman also told the audience that she joined other Democratic Members of Congress from California in formally requesting Attorney General Eric Holder to conduct an investigation into possible violations by financial institutions into their handling of delinquent mortgages, modifications and foreclosures.

Congresswoman Roybal-Allard warned the homeowners about fraudulent housing counselors that charge fees for services offered by HUD-approved counselors for free.

“It is critical for you to know that the federal government believes you should not have to pay for foreclosure prevention counseling—whether it is consultation or a loan modification.  That is why we have with us today HUD approved counselors.  These counselors are supported by the federal government to provide you with counseling services at no cost.  I repeat, at no cost.  It is important for you to remember that these counseling services are free because unfortunately there are unscrupulous people out there who are trying to take advantage of those in desperate financial situations,” the congresswoman said.  “If you are told by any organization or person such as a lawyer, counselor, realtor or anyone else that they can save your home for a fee, it is not true and they are simply trying to steal whatever money you have left.  Please share this information with others and remember to seek mortgage counseling only with a HUD-approved agency like those present today.  I hope this rescue fair will be helpful and that you leave empowered and better able to achieve a more stable future for you and your family.”
