Congressman Farr receives 100% grade from Human Rights Campaign PDF Print

Rep. Farr is praised for his support of legislation to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’
And the Defense of Marriage Act

Washington, DC Congressman Sam Farr (D-Carmel) today was awarded a 100% grade from the Human Rights Campaign’s Congressional Scorecard for the 111th Congress, for his work in support of issues of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. In the 111th Congress, Congressman Farr cosponsored legislation to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and expand early treatment for HIV, as well as supported legislation to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and expand federal jurisdiction on violent hate crimes.

“I am honored to be recognized by the Human Rights Campaign and equally proud to be a partner and champion of equal rights,” said Congressman Sam Farr. “While we have made progress on issues of equality, it is clear that we still have much work to do to ensure Americans of all races, religion, gender and sexual orientations are truly seen as equal under the eyes of the law. Equality is a core ideal on which our country was founded on, and it is our responsibility to hold this ideal true for future generations.”

For each two year session of Congress since 1989, HRC has published a Congressional Scorecard that includes key Congressional votes and co-sponsorship of pro-LGBT legislation. It is a critical tool to assist fair-minded Americans in assessing the relative support or non-support of Members of Congress and to advocate for pro-equality legislation.

“Rep. Sam Farr has been a leader in Congress for equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans,” said Joe Solmonese, President of the Human Rights Campaign.  “Whether the issue is combating bias-motivated violence, repealing the discriminatory ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ law or providing equal benefits for same sex couples, we know we can count on Sam Farr to be fighting side-by-side with us.”

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
