Keeping Social Security Strong

When I visit with North Dakotans, I hear how important Social Security is in their lives.  Because the program helps both seniors and working families in the event they suffer a significant loss because of death or disability, Social Security benefit payments reach over one in every six North Dakotans.  While the average benefit payment of just under $1,000 is modest, it makes a world of difference to recipients and their families.

That’s why I was so honored this year to be named Chairman of the House Social Security Subcommittee. Social Security faces fiscal challenges in the long run and I am committed to finding a path to put Social Security on a sound basis while we preserve this important middle-class safety net for future generations.  I oppose diverting money from Social Security to create private accounts because they would add trillions of dollars to the federal debt and endanger the financial security of millions of Americans who depend on that income for retirement.

As Chairman of this important Subcommittee, I won’t ever forget the role that Social Security has played in my life and the lives of thousands of North Dakotans. Protecting this important program will remain among my top priorities.
