U.S. Senators Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad and Congressman Earl Pomeroy announced Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded more than $550,000 for Native American community development and historic site restoration in Medora.

HUD has awarded $264,179 to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe through the Community Development Block Grant Program for Indian Tribes and Alaskan Native Villages.  The purpose of this funding is to maintain vibrant Native American communities by building suitable housing for Reservation residents and creating economic opportunities, particularly for individuals with low and moderate levels of income.

The agency has also awarded an Economic Development Initiative Special Project Grant in the amount of $292,200 to the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation for renovation and expansion of historic property in Medora.

“These grants are important investments in two of North Dakota’s historic state treasures – Medora and the Standing Rock Sioux Indian tribe,” the delegation said. “The community block grant for Standing Rock will provide hardworking people with proper homes and financial opportunities. The economic development grant for the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation will also be a vital investment in North Dakota that will help preserve and renovate an important part of our rich history.”

HUD awarded the grants with funds appropriated by Congress.
