Strengthening the Farm Safety Net

Strengthening the Farm Safety Net

Farms and ranches are the heart of North Dakota. Agriculture is our state’s number one industry, contributing over $5.5 billion to our economy. One of my top objectives in Congress is to ensure our agricultural producers and our local communities get a fair shake when it comes to farm policy, trade deals, and other issues important to rural areas.

As the only member of the House of Representatives with a seat on both the Agriculture and Ways and Means committees, I was a conferee and key negotiator on the 2008 Farm Bill.  In this role, I fought hard to secure the funds needed to establish a strong permanent disaster program that provides our state’s farmers and ranchers with the relief they need should disaster strike. I think we made significant progress with the Farm Bill, and I will continue to work with producers to improve the crop insurance program, the permanent disaster programs, and other agriculture programs that benefit all producers and the entire North Dakota farm economy.
