Jobs Bill will Help Grow Businesses, Jumpstart Hiring
March 4, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. -Congressman Charlie Melancon (La.-03) voted today for legislation to provide tax breaks for small businesses to spur hiring and put Louisianians back to work. The Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act will help create jobs by providing employers with tax incentives for hiring and retaining new employees.

"The HIRE Act will help put Louisianians back to work by providing tax cuts for businesses that hire new employees," said Rep. Melancon.  "Small businesses are our job creators in Louisiana, and we need to support them so they can grow and hire more workers. Government alone can't guarantee that everyone who wants a job has one, but legislation like the HIRE Act is a step in the right direction and will help our small businesses and workers weather a tough economy."

The HIRE ACT will also extend small business tax breaks and bond programs helping state and local governments finance school construction and other public works projects.  Over 10 years, the bill is fully paid for by cracking down on overseas tax havens and delaying the enactment of a tax break for multinational companies.

"As a fiscal conservative, I am pleased this bill is paid for and won't increase the national debt over the long-term.  We need to invest in our small businesses and get our people back to work, but we need to do it in a fiscally responsible way."

The HIRE Act passed the Senate by a bipartisan vote of 70-28 last week.
