WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Charlie Melancon (LA-03) announced the opening of the annual art competition he sponsors for local high school students in south Louisiana.  The Third Congressional District Art Competition is part of a nationwide event, voluntarily sponsored by Members of Congress, to provide young student artists with the opportunity to showcase their work locally, as well as the chance to be recognized at the national level for their artistic achievement.

"We have many creative young people in south Louisiana, and the Congressional Art Competition is an opportunity to share one talented student's work with thousands of people from around the country visiting the U.S. Capitol," said Rep. Melancon.  "The beautiful drawing by last year's Third District winner, Kimberly Lasseigne, shows the imagination and innovation of our student artists in Louisiana.  I am proud to sponsor this annual competition and encourage all of our young artists to submit their best artwork for the chance to represent our state in this national art exhibit."

The winning artwork from the Third District will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol complex for one year, along with other winning entries from around the country. The winning student artist from the Third District will also receive a renewable $5,000 scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design and will be honored at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., this June.  The second and third place winners will have their artwork displayed in Congressman Melancon's office for the next year for visitors to appreciate.

The winner of the 2009 Third Congressional District Art Competition was Kimberly Lasseigne, a student at South Lafourche High School in Lafourche Parish. Her colored pencil drawing of flowers has represented Louisiana's Third Congressional District in the U.S. Capitol art exhibit since last June.

Rep. Melancon's district staff will host the final judging of the 2010 competition on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at the Terrebonne Parish Main Library located at 151 Library Drive in Houma, Louisiana.  The judging will occur from 10:30-11:00 a.m., followed by a public viewing and awards presentation from 11:00-1:30 p.m. All entries must be submitted to one of Congressman Melancon's four district offices by the close of business on Friday May 7, 2010.

Each Member of Congress can choose one grand prize winner from his or her district.  Since the Congressional Arts Competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 students have participated in the competition and the works of thousands of young American artists have been showcased in the Capitol.
