Northrup Grumman Announced Shipyard Will Close in 2013
July 13, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, U.S. Congressman Charlie Melancon (LA-03) made the following statement in response to an announcement by Northrup Grumman that the defense contractor would close their Avondale shipyard in 2013. Avondale is supports an estimated 11,500 direct and indirect jobs in Louisiana.

“The announcement that thousands of Louisiana workers will lose their jobs in the next three years couldn't have been more cruelly timed by Northrup Grumman,” said Congressman Melancon. “We are working to cope with the severe economic impact of the BP oil disaster, and now one of our major employers has decided to close up shop and leave our state. I will fight alongside Senator Landrieu and our entire Congressional delegation to keep Avondale open so our workers can continue building ships to protect and defend our nation for years to come.”
