Flint firefighters union: 'It's a great day in Flint' because of $6.7M grant

FLINT, Michigan — Flint firefighters union President Raul Garcia said he's thankful for the $6.766 million federal grant the city was awarded.

"It's a great day in Flint," Garcia said.

He said he was surprised to hear that Flint will receive 100 percent of the grant it asked for because many other cities have received 10 percent to 20 percent of the amount they requested.

The city will be able to rehire 39 laid off firefighters for two years with the funds.

Garcia said he wasn't sure what will happen once the grant runs out in two years.

"That's a whole different chapter," he said.
