Representative Henry A. Waxman 30th District of California

Rep. Waxman serves as a Congressional appointee to the U.S. Holocaust Museum’s Memorial Council, and is committed to promoting Holocaust remembrance and pursuing restitution for Holocaust survivors. In 1994, Rep. Waxman sponsored a law to assist low-income Holocaust survivors whose federal benefits were jeopardized by proceeds from Holocaust restitution payments. In recent years, Rep. Waxman has urged the Hungarian government to make it easier for survivors to apply to a program offering compensation for family members killed by the Nazis, and advocated for property restitution in Poland and payments for ghetto laborers in Germany. He also led a congressional investigation of the International Commission on Holocaust-Era Insurance Claims (ICHEIC) examining the Commission’s failure to operate transparently and effectively. As a former chairman of the Congressional Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism, Rep. Waxman believes strongly in the importance of Holocaust education and combating Holocaust denial and anti-Semitism.
