U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will join Chairman Ike Skelton of the House Armed Services Committee on a tour of Southeastern Arizona’s military installations on Friday and Saturday, part of a busy week of public events for the Tucson lawmaker.
The week begins tomorrow with remarks at the Innovation Frontier Arizona luncheon at the Marriott Starr Pass. Giffords, a member of the House Science and Technology Committee, will speak about legisation aimed at boosting federal support for scientific research and math and science education. Gov. Janet Napolitano and U.S. Assistant Secretary of Labor Emily DeRocco also will participate in this event.
On Wednesday Giffords will announce legislation to expand the H-1B visa program during a visit with high-technology industry leaders at Breault Research Organization, a Tucson-based optical software and engineering firm. Later that day she will launch her Community Education Series on Solar Energy at Woods Memorial Library. "Solar Power 101" is the first of seven forums aimed at expanding the use of solar energy.
Giffords will hold a Workplace Townhall with about 80 employees of Cox Communications on Thursday. Recent rulings by the Federal Communications Commission and business issues will be discussed.
Giffords welcomes Skelton to Sierra Vista on Friday and accompanies him to Tucson on Saturday. Giffords, a member of the Armed Services Committee, and Skelton, a 16-term lawmaker from Missouri’s 4th Congressional District, will receive mission briefings at Fort Huachuca, the 162nd Fighter Wing of the Arizona Air National Guard, and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. They also will meet with service members who have recently deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
