Kucinich: Congress Must Act to Protect Americans in Need

Congressman Kucinich 111th

Washington, Jun 7 -

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today released the following statement about unemployment benefits that are expected to expire for hundreds of thousands of Americans if Congress fails to act soon:

“The State of Ohio has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, at just over 10%.  Minority communities bear the brunt of the economy downturn, with unemployment levels to 15%. Without an extension of unemployment benefits, it is estimated that an additional 50,000 Ohioans will lose their unemployment benefits in the coming weeks.

“I urge Congress to put aside partisan politics and address the fundamental problems facing our constituents as they struggle to stay in their homes and provide for their families.  Despite the extension of benefits passed in the House at the end of last month, many Ohioans could be left without their benefits as they continue to struggle through long-term unemployment.

“I urge the Senate to act swiftly to provide an extension of benefits for American families most in need, and I urge both the House and the Senate to address the underlying needs of those facing long term unemployment,” said Kucinich.
