First District Surface Transportation Authorization Requests:

Project of Regional and National Significance Request

Development of Interstate 73 in South Carolina.
I-73 is Congressional High Priority Corridor #5, and the South Carolina portion extends through 4 counties: Marlboro, Dillon, Marion and Horry. This project is not only important for infrastructure and interstate transportation, but it would relieve regional and local congestion, serve as hurricane evacuation, provide military access, assist in population growth and would bring economic development to the region. I-73 would provide Interstate access to Myrtle Beach, SC, which is currently the busiest resort destination in the nation without an Interstate connection. This would most certainly help industry in the region. Additionally, construction of the roadway would have a positive impact on a region where unemployment is well above the state and national averages. I-73 connects 6 states (Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North and South Carolina) with over 900 miles of roadway. The total cost to construct I-73 in South Carolina is approximately $2,000,000,000, and any funding obtained through the upcoming authorization bill will move the development of this mega-project forward. For more information about I-73 in South Carolina, visit the project's website.
