Washington, D.C. – Subcommittee on Health Ranking Member Henry Brown Jr. expressed support for strong working relationships between the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and public sectors to ensure veterans receive the best care possible.

Brown’s comments were made during a Subcommittee oversight hearing yesterday on VA’s implementation of the Capital Asset Realignment for Enhanced Services (CARES) plan and the future of VA’s health infrastructure.

“CARES was designed to be a blueprint for the future,” said Brown. “It is intended to help modernize and align VA’s health care facilities with the changing veteran population. Among the several ways identified by the CARES Commission on how to improve quality and access to care, was increasing collaborative partnerships between VA and its affiliated medical universities.”

Brown expressed dismay that VA has not requested funding for construction of a joint-health care facility with the Medical University of South Carolina even though Congress has authorized it to do so.  Brown, who represents the first district in South Carolina, has called for the ‘Charleston Model’ to be implemented immediately.

“As we evaluate the effectiveness of CARES, it is also vital that we realize the importance of collaborative partnerships.  Building on the close relationships that VA has already established with medical schools across the nation is a powerful tool that VA must leverage to ensure that our veterans have the greatest access to the most advanced medicine and medical technology.”
