Kucinich Applauds Commissioners Resolution On Social Security

Washington, Jun 9, 2005 - Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) issued the following statement on the Cuyahoga County Commissioners resolution opposing Social Security privatization:

“I applaud the Cuyahoga County Commissioners for their vision and leadership on this urgent issue.

“Social Security is the most successful social program that this country has ever seen.

“Despite the reckless rhetoric of this Administration, the facts on Social Security are clear. One, there is a Social Security surplus, and it is secure for decades to come. Two, Social Security is not facing a crisis, although this Administration is doing its best to create one. And three, the Administration’s ill-advised Social Security privatization scheme will rack up trillions of dollars on debt, and lead to a cut in benefits.

“The President’s misleading assertion does the debate on Social Security a real disservice. As the President is well aware, the Social Security Trust Fund is not just a filing cabinet, as he claims, but represents $1.7 trillion dollars in solemn obligations of the United States. The President is also all well aware, that the Trust Fund has the full faith and credit of the United States treasury.

“Just as they did in the lead-up to the war in Iraq, this Administration is again using the Presidential bully pulpit to mislead the country and advocate an ill-advised policy.

“I want to thank the Commissioners for advancing this important resolution and for their courage to stand up, on behalf of the residents of Cuyahoga County, and oppose the Administration’s plan to dismantle Social Security.

“I look forward to working with the Commissioners and we continue our fight at both the national and the local level to ensure that Social Security is secure for all generations.”
