Congressman Donnelly Hosts Senior Seminar and Veterans' Benefits Panel in Rochester

Rochester, IN – Today, Congressman Joe Donnelly hosted two events designed to help seniors and veterans.  First, he hosted a senior seminar at the Fulton Senior Community Center that featured experts discussing a variety of scams that have recently been attempted against senior citizens.  The panelists offered advice to the seniors in attendance about how they can keep their personal information and finances safe.  Topics of discussion included Social Security, Medicare “donut hole” payments, and internet banking fraud.

“I was pleased to host this information session for seniors, because there are far too many people out there these days that are trying to take advantage of our seniors’ trust,” said Donnelly.  “I hope seniors will take the information they learned today and spread the word to their friends.  We don’t want to see anyone taken advantage of.”

For more information on how seniors can avoid scams and fraud, please visit the Indiana Attorney General’s Consumer Protection: Senior Center website or the FBI’s Fraud Target: Senior Citizens website.  Congressman Donnelly will be hosting two additional senior panels in the coming weeks.  On Tuesday, August 31st, he will host a senior panel discussing Social Security and Medicare issues in Plymouth.  On Thursday, September 10th, he will host another senior panel discussing how seniors can protect themselves from scams and fraud in LaPorte.

Second, Congressman Donnelly hosted a veterans’ benefits panel to give area veterans information on how to access the benefits and health care they’ve earned.  Representatives from the Indianapolis Regional Office of the Veterans Benefits Administration, VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, Indiana Veterans’ Home in Lafayette, and two county Veterans Service Officers took part in a panel to give information and answer veterans’ questions.

“Our brave veterans deserve timely access to the benefits and health care they’ve earned,” said Donnelly.  “My goal in hosting an event like the one we organized today was to provide a forum where Hoosier veterans could receive information from VA service providers and get the answers they need in order to access VA services and benefits.”
