South Bend, IN- Today at Perley Primary Center in South Bend, Congressman Joe Donnelly announced that South Bend Schools Corporation will receive a $3,162,528 grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Magnet School Assistance grant program for one Montessori and two fine arts magnet programs. Donnelly wrote a letter of support on behalf of the South Bend Community School Corporation.

I would like to congratulate South Bend Community School Corporation for securing a Magnet School Assistance Grant and was pleased to offer my support.”
Senator Richard Lugar and Senator Evan Bayh also wrote letters of support on behalf of the South Bend Community School Corporation.
“As a former school board member, I support South Bend’s efforts to increase academic achievement and I recognize the importance of fine arts and after-school programs,” Senator Lugar said.
“It’s crucial that our local schools have the resources they need to create an environment in which students can excel,” Senator Bayh said. “South Bend Schools are working to do just that through their Montessori and magnet programs, and these funds are a significant boost to those efforts.”
Magnet School Assistance grants are to be used to establish and operate magnet schools that are operated under a court-ordered or federally-approved desegregation plan. A magnet school is defined as a public elementary school, public secondary school, public elementary education center, or public secondary education center that offers a special curriculum capable of attracting substantial numbers of students of different racial backgrounds. Magnet programs aim to eliminate, reduce, or prevent minority group isolation in elementary and secondary schools
