Donnelly Among Top Ten Most Independent Democrats In Congress

Washington, D.C. -  A nonpartisan Congressional Quarterly report released last week ranked Congressman Joe Donnelly as one of the most likely Democrats in Congress to buck the Democratic Party leadership, led by Nancy Pelosi.

“Hoosiers sent me to Congress to do right by the people of northern Indiana,” Donnelly said. “While I am proud to call myself a Democrat because of our commitment to working families, my top loyalty is to the people who sent me here.  Hoosiers have always been able to work together to get the job done and do what’s right and I believe it’s in the best interests of American people for members of Congress to take the same approach.”

Based on an “independence percentile,” Congressional Quarterly’s comprehensive, statistical breakdown shows that based on approximately 250 votes with a clear party line thus far in the 110th Congress, Donnelly is 9th out of 233 Democrats most likely to vote against the wishes of his Party.  Of the freshman Democrats on the list, Donnelly ranks 4th.

Donnelly has voted against his party on a number of issues including providing federal funding for stem cell research and the budget proposed by House Democrats. He has continuously voted to provide funding for troops in harm’s way and strengthen ethics reform. Opposed to amnesty for illegal immigrants, Donnelly believes it is important to hold employers accountable when they break the laws and strengthen security at the borders.
