Washington, D.C. - Congressman Joe Donnelly released the following statement in response to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s proposal to cut funding for the war in Iraq by March 2008 if Bush vetoes legislation imposing a timeline.
“I was upset when I learned that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is considering legislation that would cut off funds for troops in Iraq if the president vetoes legislation that includes a timeline for redeployment of our troops. I believe that Congress and the administration must work together to find a new course in Iraq. But, Senator Reid’s proposal to deny our troops what they need to execute their mission would further endanger our service members and not bring us any closer to a resolution.
“I have said numerous times that Congress must continue providing full funding for our troops in the field, period. That’s why I voted for the Iraq War funding bill, despite its imperfections. As we move forward in Iraq, I will continue to stand by our troops to get them what they need when they need it. Our troops deserve our full support and respect, not Washington’s political game-playing.
