Obey STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT'S
LATEST IRAQ ADDRESS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Seventh District Congressman Dave Obey (D-WI) today released the following statement on the President's address on Iraq last night:

“When you strip away the fog, all the President outlined last night was a plan to get us back, six months from now, to the same place we were in Iraq six months ago as far as troop levels are concerned.

“That is not part of a strategy to withdraw troops; it is something they would have to do anyway, because they do not have enough troops to sustain existing levels.

“As the President's remarks obliquely indicated last night, it is part of a plan that will leave us in an occupying position in Iraq for the next ten years. That is a strategy that will destroy what remaining influence and trust we have in the Muslim world.

“It is clear that this President has gotten us into a war that he has absolutely no idea how to get out of.  He obviously plans to dump the critical decisions on his successor.

“What a legacy.”
