A note to Downtown Nashville residents:

As you may know, the United States Postal Service is currently in the midst of record losses.  The economic downturn has had a major impact on the current state of the USPS as consumers are purchasing less, retailers are advertising less, and the financial services sector – one of the Postal Service’s largest customers – has seen cuts all across the board.  These cutbacks, along with the increased use of electronic bill payment systems and e-mail, have lead to their difficult times.  A recent release shows a loss of over $1 billion dollars in the past two months alone.

In January, Postmaster General John Potter announced a number of cost-saving measures in an effort to stem the tide of losses.  These measures include reducing work hours, streamlining processes, and consolidating post office locations – all in an effort to reduce costs while continuing to provide the services on which we all rely.

Our office was recently notified that the USPS is considering closing the Post Office located in the Arcade in Nashville, consolidating its services to the Broadway Station location.  The Arcade Station provides integral services to downtown Nashville’s business district, and I am concerned about the impact that closing this particular branch would have on my constituents.  Gail Kerr’s column in yesterday’s Tennessean underscores these concerns.

I wanted to inform you that the United States Postal Service will be holding a public meeting this Monday, June 29th, at 6:00 P.M. at the Nashville Public Library.  This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the plans the Postal Service is considering and voice your opinions
