War in Iraq

In 2002, Congresswoman Grace F. Napolitano voted in the International Relations Committee and on the House floor against the congressional resolution to authorize the use of force in Iraq. She strongly preferred using diplomatic means, in concert with the United Nations and our traditional allies, to disarm Saddam Hussein’s regime. However, now that the President has decided to use military force in Iraq, Napolitano stands 100% behind our troops.

At the time of the vote, Napolitano felt that President Bush had not articulated a clear and convincing case that Iraq posed an imminent threat to the United States. While she firmly believed that Hussein was working on weapons of mass destruction — including chemical, biological and nuclear weapons — she felt that Congress did not have sufficient information regarding the extent or the immediacy of the threat Hussein posed to the United States. Further, she did not feel that the United States had fully exhausted diplomatic means of addressing the situation.

Now that the United States is fully engaged in Iraq, Napolitano’s thoughts and prayers are with the brave troops and their families. She offers her sincerest condolences to those who have lost loved ones in combat. She continues to pray for a swift resolution of this situation and for the safe return of our men and women in uniform.

With U.S. and British forces now in control in Iraq, Napolitano is turning her attention to the rebuilding of Iraq. She believes the U.S. must work with the U.N. in this effort. If the United States continues its unilateral attitude, not only will our national image abroad suffer further damage, but we will also be forced to spend additional billions of dollars rebuilding Iraq—money that is needed in our own communities to address domestic priorities including healthcare, education and small business needs.
