Congresswoman Grace F. Napolitano (CA-38) will again sponsor “An Artistic Discovery,” an annual national high school art competition conducted by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The contest provides members of Congress the opportunity to showcase the many talented youth throughout their districts.

All high school students within the 38th Congressional District are invited to participate.

Guidelines for the art contest were mailed to all high school Principals and Art Teachers throughout the 38 th Congressional District, February 28, 2007. Art will be delivered to Congresswoman Napolitano’s District Office and will be judged by a committee comprised of members of the community, with an awards ceremony scheduled to take place in the 38 th District on April 28, 2007.

Entries will be accepted April 2 – April 6, 2007

Submit all entries to participating Art Teachers or to
Congresswoman Napolitano’s District Office.

This year will mark the 26th anniversary of the competition. Since its creation in 1982, hundreds of high school students have participated. The 1st Place Winners have an opportunity to have their artwork displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capital Building.

General Guidelines

  • The competition is open to high school students only. Exceptions will be made for schools that have 7th through 12th grades in one building. Each Member office can choose whether or not to include 7th and 8th grades in the art show if there are schools in their district that fit these criteria.
  • Artwork categories are as follows:
    • Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
    • Drawings: pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers
    • Collage: must be two-dimensional
    • Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
    • Mixed media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, etc.
    • Computer generated art
    • Photography
