Washington, Aug 5, 2010 -

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on Speaker Pelosi’s announcement to call the House back into session to pass emergency assistance that will prevent teachers, firefighters, and policemen from being fired:

“I applaud Speaker Pelosi for taking the important step of calling the House back into session so we can pass this critical legislation. This emergency assistance to schools and localities will help prevent hundreds of thousands of teachers, firefighters, and policemen from being fired. The cost of this assistance is paid for by closing a tax loophole that rewards big corporations that outsource American jobs. Incredibly, the Republican Leader John Boehner disparagingly referred to those who teach our children, protect our homes, and keep our streets safe as ‘special interests.’ Washington Republicans are opposed to supporting our teachers, firefighters, and policemen at home in order to protect corporate tax loopholes that promote the export of American jobs.”
