Washington, Jul 27, 2010 -

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement on the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) report on the Red Line Metro crash:

“I applaud the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and its staff for this thorough review of the tragic Red Line crash on June 22, 2009. This report clearly shows that last year’s accident was both a technical and organizational failure at an agency where safety was not the priority it should have been.  The NTSB has found unacceptable lapses at all levels of Metro’s organization.  WMATA must continue to take action to improve its safety culture and implement the technical changes and upgrades NTSB recommends.  Congress must pass legislation to give the Federal Transit Administration effective oversight authority.  We cannot and will not accept a continuation of the failures that led to last year’s terrible tragedy.”
