Nevada's Congressional District Three

Titus Cosponsors PAYGO Legislation to Restore Fiscal Responsibility

Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s Third District released the following statement today after she cosponsored legislation to reinstitute statutory pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) rules.  The bill was introduced by Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and has more than 150 cosponsors.

“During the 1990s, PAYGO rules helped bring down the deficit and fostered an environment of fiscal responsibility that led to economic growth and prosperity.  It is time to reinstate these rules once again in order to restore fiscal discipline.

“This Congress inherited a fiscal and economic mess after eight years of economic policies that left our nation awash in red ink.  We took unprecedented action to address the worst recession in a generation and make critical short-term investments in energy, health care, and education that will create jobs and get our economy back on track.  Now is the time to tighten our belt and reign in our nation’s deficit.

“By requiring Congress to save a dollar to spend a dollar, we will reign in our budget deficit and strengthen our economy.  I am proud to support this legislation and urge its swift passage.”
