Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement on the attack on DAI’s office in Kunduz, Afghanistan:

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those killed today in the attack on DAI’s office in Kunduz, Afghanistan.  The actions taken by their security subcontractor, Edinburgh International, to protect the compound saved lives and will not be forgotten.  DAI’s work, as part of their contract with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is important to our effort in Afghanistan, and their effort to strengthen local governments and communities is critical to the country’s long-term success.  President Karzai has condemned the attack, and I urge the Afghan government to do everything in its power to find those responsible for this senseless violence and bring them to justice.”

BACKGROUND:

DAI – a USAID contractor based in Bethesda, Maryland – suffered an attack on their Local Governance and Community Development (LGCD) Program office in Kunduz, Afghanistan today. The four people who were killed – one British, one German, and two Afghan nationals – all worked for their security subcontractor, Edinburgh International.  Funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), LGCD works to extend the reach of the Afghan government. It engages local governments and communities in promoting their own development, thereby building the credibility of local authorities and contributing to stabilization by offering a viable governance alternative in places susceptible to the influence of anti-government elements.
