Rockville, Oct 8, 2010 -

Small non-profits in the Eighth District of Maryland nationwide who are at risk of losing their tax-exempt status because they failed to file required returns for 2007, 2008, and 2009 can preserve their status by filing returns by October 15, 2010.

The Pension Protection Act of 2006 required that, beginning in 2007, all tax-exempt organizations, other than churches and church-related groups, must file an annual return with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).  The law also required the automatic revocation of the status for any organization that fails to file for three consecutive years.  The IRS has engaged in outreach and set up this one-time relief program to inform the at-risk organizations.

There are over 1,000 non-profit organizations at risk of losing their tax-exempt status in Maryland’s Eighth Congressional District.   To see the IRS’ list of the names and last-known addresses of these organizations, as well as guidance about how to come back into compliance, click here.
