Kucinich: House Bill Hand Out To Biotech Industry

H Res. 252 Will Hurt Family Farmers, Consumers and Empower WTO

Washington, Jun 10 -

Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH), today, spoke out against H. Res. 252, a bill supporting the Administration complaint to the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding genetically engineered food. The bill will hurt family farmers, consumers and relinquish US power to the WTO.

“This bill sells out family farmers, consumers, and democracy to further enrich Monsanto and ADM,” stated Kucinich. “Allowing the WTO to roll back the fate of food safety laws in the EU or any other country is a recipe for disaster. The citizens of our nation elected us to craft food safety laws, not the WTO.”

In 2002, Kucinich, introduced five bills that will provide a comprehensive regulatory framework for all genetically engineered plants, animals, bacteria, and other organisms. Kucinich will soon reintroduce similar legislation to protect family farmers and require the labeling of all GE foods.

“Food in developing nations flows from areas of hunger and need to areas where money is concentrated, in the northern hemisphere,” continued Kucinich. “Today’s bill will force inappropriate technology on developing nation’s harming their long term food security.”
