Town Hall Draws Over 3,800 New Mexicans, Luján Answers Wide Range of Questions

Washington, DC – Last night, Rep. Ben Ray Luján held a telephone town hall on health insurance reform. Over 3,800 New Mexicans joined the call to ask questions and discuss health insurance reform issues of interest to them. Rep. Luján took questions that covered a broad range of topics from the cost of health insurance reform to the benefits for small businesses. This is Rep. Luján’s second telephone town hall on health insurance reform. The first was held last month following the district work period.

“Last night over 3,800 New Mexicans joined me to discuss health insurance reform, an important topic that is being discussed in Congress,” said Rep. Luján. “There were callers from every corner of the district, representing a wide range of views. This telephone town hall was a great opportunity to directly address their questions and review the substance of the legislation. I will continue to look for new ways to reach out to the people of the district, listen to them about important issues before Congress, and address their questions.”

During the call, Rep. Luján took a variety of questions from retired teachers, small business owners and others who were concerned about the rising costs of health care. He also addressed some misconceptions and concerns about the legislation, including concerns about costs and the impact on the deficit. He also discussed the legislation’s impact on those with pre-existing conditions. He repeatedly expressed his strong support for a robust public option, noting that a robust public option will decrease costs and increase choice.
