Rep. Kucinich asks President Clinton to Overrule EPA and Shutdown the WTI Hazardous Waste Incinerator
Washington,
Nov 2, 2000 -
Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Cleveland) sent a letter to President Clinton today urging the President to overrule EPA and shut down the WTI hazardous waste incinerator for six months consistent with the EPA Ombudsman recommendations.
Kucinich's letter states, "The mounting evidence uncovered by the Ombudsman indicates that the safety of this facility is very questionable. I urge you to protect the local citizens of East Liverpool and shut down this incinerator now."
"The evidence is sufficient to cease operations at the WTI incinerator immediately," said Representative Kucinich. "Waiting any longer only subjects the local residents to more uncertainties."
The WTI hazardous waste incinerator in East Liverpool, Ohio sits 1,000 feet from an elementary school. On October 20, 2000 the EPA Ombudsman, Robert Martin, issued a preliminary report about this incinerator at the request of the local community. The EPA Ombudsman recommended a reassessment of the health impacts of this hazardous waste facility and a six month cessation of the incinerator while the new health assessment is performed.
