Rep. Kucinich Hails US/EU Blue Ribbon Panel Report on Genetically Engineered Food
Call for Mandatory Labeling and Safety Testing Should Be Headed

Washington, Dec 18, 2000 - Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Cleveland) hailed today's release of a report from the Biotechnology Consultative Forum, that recommended mandatory labeling and mandatory safety testing of genetically engineered food. The blue ribbon panel was formed by the United States and the European Union to ease trade tensions.

"The Biotechnology Consultative Forum took a major leap forward in this debate by placing the interests of the consumer first," said Representative Kucinich. "The reports shows that a consensus is building to use a precautionary approach with genetically engineered crops."

The report also made strong recommendations concerning scientific independence, environmental protection, and liability issues.
