Reps. Kucinich And Lee Send Letter To President Expressing Concerns About Attack on Fallujah

Washington, Nov 6, 2004 - Co-chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) today sent a letter to President Bush expressing great concerns about the anticipated attack on Fallujah.

The letter states:

Dear Mr. President,

We call upon you to reconsider the assault on Fallujah. House-to-house combat will exact heavy casualties upon both our troops and innocent civilians. A siege of Fallujah will be counterproductive, too, as the city would end up being more of a focal point for insurgents than it is now. The implication for the national security of the United States of America needs to be thoughtfully considered as to the reaction of the world community to such an assault on a civilian population.

We hope you will listen closely to the wisdom of the Secretary General of the United Nations who has counseled against a full-scale assault on Fallujah.

There is no question our troops have the ability to take the city, but at what cost and to what end? A year from now will Fallujah be just another graveyard in a country teeming with anti-American sentiment because of the heavy toll on civilians?

We call upon you to use the opportunity of a new term to rethink the overall strategy in Iraq and enable a transition to Iraq self-determination with the help of and participation of the United Nations.

We stand prepared to work with you in this regard, to bring our troops home and to better provide for the safety and security of both the people of our nation and the people of Iraq.
