Sen. Lisa Murkowski is the senior senator from Alaska . She is only the sixth senator from Alaska , and the first senator born in the state. A third generation Alaskan, Murkowski was born May 22, 1957, in Ketchikan and raised in towns across the state: Wrangell, Juneau, Fairbanks and Anchorage .

Murkowski graduated from high school in Fairbanks . She holds a BA in economics from Georgetown University and a law degree from Willamette University College of Law. Murkowski was elected to three terms in the Alaska House of Representatives before joining the U.S. Senate in 2002.

Murkowski is only the 33rd female to serve in the U.S. Senate since its founding in 1789. She is the ranking Republican of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.

Murkowski is married to Verne Martell. They have two sons, Nicolas and Matthew. She enjoys spending time with her family, skiing, fishing and camping.
