Senate Panel Approves Small Business Measures

A Senate panel Thursday approved a pair of bills aimed at bolstering high-tech and minority or veteran-owned small businesses.

One measure (S 1233) would reauthorize the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs through 2023.

The second bill (S 1229) would reauthorize a host of entrepreneurial development programs within the Small Business Administration, including programs aimed at fostering businesses owned by women, veterans and American Indians.

The Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee approved both bills in a single 19-0 vote.

A House Small Business subcommittee approved a similar reauthorization (HR 2767) last week that would extend the programs through 2011.

“These two important pieces of legislation will go a long way toward harvesting new opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses all over America,” said committee Chairwoman Mary L. Landrieu, D-La.
