Klobuchar, Franken, and Peterson Praise Army Corps Decision to Allow Local Flood Protection Plan

April 28, 2010

Washington, D.C.  – Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken and Congressman Collin Peterson announced today that the U.S. Army has decided that a locally preferred Red River diversion plan can be recommended by the Corps of Engineers.

“A North Dakota diversion has always been our goal and today’s announcement is a significant step forward,” said Klobuchar. “We must continue to work with the Army Corps and local communities on both sides of the Red River to advance this project that will provide permanent flood protection and substantial economic development to the region. We must also continue to address the concerns of downstream communities.”

“I couldn’t be happier that the Army Corps can now move forward with their study of the locally preferred plan for the Red River flood diversion,” said Franken. “Today’s announcement is a real boost to our permanent flood protection efforts in the Fargo-Moorhead area.”

This announcement affirms the April unanimous decision by the Metro Flood Study Work Group, which includes local elected officials from Moorhead and Clay County, Minnesota and Fargo and Cass County, North Dakota.
