Napolitano Promotes Citizenship at Workshop

BASSETT, CA – Congresswoman Grace F. Napolitano (D-Norwalk) hosted a free Citizenship Workshop in conjunction with the NALEO Educational Fund to assist eligible Legal Permanent Residents in applying for U.S. citizenship at the Bassett County Park Gymnasium on Saturday, November 10.

“All eligible Legal Permanent Residents should apply to become U.S. Citizens,” said Napolitano.  “Right now Latinos and other immigrant groups are being wrongfully blamed for our society’s problems.  By becoming naturalized citizens immigrants gain the right to vote and the ability to influence the policies that affect them.  Becoming citizens and voting is the easiest, surest way for immigrant communities to protect themselves from the xenophobia they currently face.”

Congresswoman Napolitano hosted the workshop in order to promote citizenship in the local community by helping eligible Legal Permanent Residents gain access to services that help them successfully apply for citizenship.  The free services offered at the workshop included verification of eligibility, assistance with the N-400 application, passport photographs, and application review.  Representatives of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and immigration attorneys answered questions applicable to citizenship and responded to inquiries about status and many community volunteers were on hand to help with applications.

“I hope that everybody who came here today to apply to become a citizen will go back to their family, friends, and neighbors and let them know about the services available to help them with their applications,” said Napolitano.  “When we, as citizens, combine our voices there is no limit to what we can accomplish together.”
