Supporting Our Law Enforcement and Public Safety Providers

When I was a prosecutor, I worked closely with law enforcement in Arizona to crack down on drugs dealers. Our law enforcement personnel do a great job, but they could do even more with more resources and I am determined to get them what they need.  I am proud to have supported expanding the Community Oriented Police Services and Byrne grant programs, which will help us put more officers on the streets.

Working in a border state, Arizona’s law enforcement faces the additional challenges of drug, gun, money and human smuggling between the United States and Mexico. To make sure law enforcement personnel have what they need to shut down trafficking routes, I introduced the Southwest Border Narcotics Reduction Act. The bill would give the entire state of Arizona a special designation as a high-intensity drug trafficking area to help our law enforcement agencies access more support and increase coordination with federal, state and tribal law enforcement as they crack down on drug cartels.

I’ve lived my whole life in Arizona, and I have seen too many wildfires devastate our communities. It has given me a deep respect for our firefighters, and I have worked hard to support them as a Member of Congress. I introduced a bill to waive the cost-sharing requirement for a major fire department grant program so that rural communities can afford to keep hiring more personnel. That measure has been endorsed by the International Association of Firefighters. I introduced a successful amendment to the Federal Land Assistance, Management and Enhancement (FLAME) Act that will help cut through red tape to make it easier for cities and towns in rural Arizona to receive federal funds for wildfire prevention, and helped our fire departments access $10 million more so they can continue meeting their training and equipment needs.
