Landrieu Encourages Participation in First-Ever Small Business Saturday

WASHINGTON – Chair of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today encouraged nationwide participation in the first-ever Small Business Saturday, on November 27, 2010.  Much like the traditions of “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday,” Small Business Saturday is a day to celebrate the very businesses that boost our local economies and drives shoppers to these neighborhood retailers.

“Every year, national chains benefit from the millions of people beginning their holiday shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday,” said Senator Landrieu.  “This year, we have an opportunity to support the small businesses that keep our economy running.  Small Business Saturday is our way to recognize the small, independently-owned businesses that sustain the local communities across America.  I encourage shoppers to visit their neighborhood small businesses this holiday season and, particularly, this Saturday.  We need to boost the national economy, but we cannot forget to also lend a hand to Main Street businesses.”

Prior to Small Business Saturday, the holiday shopping season traditionally kicked off with Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and later, with the rise in Internet sales, Cyber Monday.  In 2009, according the National Retail Federation, roughly 195 million people shopping in stores and online spent more than $41 billion during the four-day weekend following Thanksgiving.  These national shopping days target national chains and online retailers.  The goal of Small Business Saturday is to drive sales to independently-owned businesses.
