Water

Global water consumption rose almost tenfold in the last century.  Water conservation is particularly important in the American Southwest, where depleted stores of groundwater and expanding Sunbelt populations are straining our water resources.

Our water resources will largely determine not only the health of our environment, but also the continued economic vitality of Southern Arizona.  Congresswoman Giffords believes that we need innovative solutions to ensure that we can protect our natural resources and continue to provide sufficient water to our communities.

In Southern Arizona, the Upper San Pedro Partnership (USPP) is one element of the innovative solutions needed to address this issue.  Its mission is to identify sustainable solutions to mitigate water demand due to drought, growth, and other factors. USPP also makes it possible for a coalition of federal agencies, state and local governments, environmental groups, and private companies to develop and implement plans to protect the San Pedro Watershed.

In Southern Arizona, we recognize that water is one of our most precious resources. It must be protected not only for our own health and safety, but for those of future generations. As a member of the House Science and Technology Committee, Congresswoman Giffords is committed to developing comprehensive, practical solutions that will preserve and protect water resources in Southern Arizona.

Here are some great resources to check out:

TUCSON WATER has begun implementing new water-saving programs as recommended by the Community Conservation Task Force, and approved by Tucson's Mayor and Council. These programs are designed to assist customers to take advantage of new, water-saving technologies. Check out the Toilet Rebate program.

In 2008, Congresswoman Giffords hosted a Water Issues Townhall in Sahuarita. You can view all the presentations by clicking here.
