Rep. Chu Issues Statement on Last Night's Rescue of 35 Immigrants Illegally Detained in Baldwin Park Home

"Last night's events are one more reason why we need comprehensive immigration reform and why we need it right now."

Last night, police  rescued 35 immigrants being held hostage in a Baldwin Park, California home.  According to reports, they were smuggled into the country from Mexico and Central America and had been held hostage for the past month in an 800-square-foot  residence until family members paid their captives a certain sum of money.

"Last night, I was shocked to learn of the discovery of three dozen immigrants being held against their will in a local Baldwin Park home," said Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-Calif.). "No human being should suffer the detainment and cramped quarters these men, women and children underwent. Our government must commit to protecting every person living within America's borders. We cannot allow an unscrupulous few to use our broken immigration system to prey on society's most vulnerable members. And that's why last night's events are one more reason why we need comprehensive immigration reform and why we need it right now."

Congresswoman Judy Chu is a strong advocate for effective and humane immigration reform. She is on the House Immigration Subcommittee and an original co-sponsor of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR-ASAP).

Chu's career in politics spans 24 years. A lifelong educator, Congresswoman Chu taught community college classes in Los Angeles and East Los Angeles for 20 years. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology and a B.A. in mathematics.
