Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) issued the following statement regarding today's federal ruling granting the Justice Department's request for an injunction against Arizona’s SB 1070 Immigration Law and blocking key provisions of the legislation from taking effect:
"I strongly supported the Justice Department's decision to challenge Arizona's misguided immigration law and wholeheartedly back today’s injunction," said Chu. "Only one entity has authority over our nation's immigration laws – the federal government. And with this authority comes the responsibility to use it. It's long past time Congress fixed America's broken system. This ruling shows we need comprehensive immigration reform and we need it now."
Congresswoman Chu is a strong advocate for effective and humane immigration reform. She is on the House Immigration Subcommittee and is an original co-sponsor of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR-ASAP).
Congresswoman Chu's career in politics spans 24 years. She is a member of the House Education and Labor, Government Oversight and Judiciary Committees. Prior to her election to Congress she served three terms as the Assemblymember representing the 49th District, where she chaired the important Assembly Appropriations Committee. A lifelong educator, Congresswoman Chu taught community college classes in Los Angeles and East Los Angeles for 20 years. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology and a B.A. in mathematics.
