Rep. Chu Supports Bill to Counter Supreme Court Ruling on Campaign Finance

Washington, D.C. – Today Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-CA) announced her support for The Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections (DISCLOSE) Act.

"The Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission was a major setback for democratic elections in America.  Today, Congress has taken an important step toward stemming the inevitable flood of special interest money into America's elections with the introduction of The DISCLOSE Act.  This bill will improve transparency and establish tough disclosure requirements for election-related spending.

"Every American should have the opportunity to participate in our electoral system.  Unfortunately, the Supreme Court decision allows corporations and special interest to spend unlimited funds and drown out the voices of everyday Americans.  This bill will ensure that corporate executives and special interest leaders disclose their contributions and take responsibility for their political advertisements.  When this bill is passed, all Americans will clearly see how corporations and special interest groups attempt to influence the political system.

"I look forward to joining Rep. Chris Van Hollen and Rep. Robert Brady as a cosponsor of this legislation."

Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission was a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court holding that corporate funding of independent political broadcasts in candidate elections cannot be limited under the First Amendment.
