a Representative from Illinois; born in Chicago, Ill., April 10,
1899; Ph.B., University of Chicago, Chicago, Ill., 1919; actor; author; elected
as a Democrat to the Seventy-ninth Congress (January 3, 1945-January 3, 1947);
unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the Eightieth Congress in 1946; United
States Representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO), 1950; died on January 28, 1994, in White
Plains, N.Y.
