High-Risk Pool for Individuals Who Cannot Find Affordable Health Care Coverage

A troubling insurance practice the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) will end is refusal to insure individuals with pre-existing conditions or charging these individuals very high premiums.  Until that provision takes effect in 2014, (beginning on July 1, 2010) individuals with pre-existing conditions that do not have access to health insurance will be able to apply for health insurance from a new high-risk pool, which includes significant protections to ensure that premiums are affordable.

New Mexico is in the process of establishing its new high risk pool; it is likely that the state will receive at least $37 million to operate this pool.  Check back to get more information on New Mexico's high-risk pool as changes go into effect.
